MATH CHALLENGE
--------------
Copyright 1991 - 1995 Just For Me Software, Inc.
OVERVIEW OF THE GAME
--------------------
o Math Challenge is a game designed to assist children in
learning their math tables. It provides a color, fun-
filled environment that encourages youngsters to learn.
o The rate of progress is individualized to match the pace
of each student. In advance of student usage, a parent or
teacher decides:
-- what subject to test (e.g., addition, subtraction,
etc.)
-- how many problems to include in test
-- what part of the math tables to include
o The feedback given to that child is personalized by
referencing the child's name in the text.
o For added motivation, parents or teachers insert a code
number that can be tied to some sort of reward. For
example, we would allow our children to stay up and read
another 15 minutes every night if they reached the code
number.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES OF THE GAME INCLUDE:
---------------------------------------
o Enticing VGA graphics with true photographic quality,
colorful animation, and interesting sound effects
o Regular periodic encouragement for correct answers
(including verbal response if sound card present)
o Recall/retesting of all problems missed
o Cute "storyboard" text personalized for your child (first
and last name)
o Full mouse support -- i.e., children can progress through
entire program solely using the mouse
o Rapid advancing through screens possible by using <ENTER>
key or clicking the left mouse button
o Ability to toggle sound on and off with <F5> key
o Ability to "save progress" using <ESCAPE> key -- and
return to game later
- 1 - - 2 -
o Ability to keep track of personalization data for up to
seven children within one directory.
o Ability to turn off photograph and personalized text
sequences to enable timed math table testing.
o On-screen help is available with the <F2> and <F3> keys if
you forget the instructions while playing MATH CHALLENGE.
MATH CHALLENGE SOFTWARE CONTENTS
--------------------------------
o Your Math Challenge program is completely contained on the
one floppy disk provided. This disk include:
-- program software for child usage
-- software for parents to make selections with
-- photographs/words/action sequences.
We suggest that before you attempt to use your master
floppy disk, make a back-up copy using a DOS DISKCOPY
command.
USING THE "PARENT" PROGRAM
--------------------------
o Parents, before starting , you may wish to input your test
instructions by typing PARENT at the DOS prompt before
your child starts.
o Before returning to the DOS prompt, you will be asked to
answer the following questions:
-- File Number -- This allows you to store instructions
for more than one child at a time. Use a different
file number for each child that will be using the
program. If only one child will be using the
program, we suggest you use file number 1.
-- Name (e.g., John Smith) -- Please be sure to enter
both a first and last name separated by a space.
-- Goal -- A number from 30 to 900 should be entered
(200 is recommended). This determines what score you
child must reach before the code number is revealed.
-- Code Number -- Parents or teachers are asked to
insert a code number. Successful completion of the
program reveals the code number, which can then be
used as justification for some sort of reward.
- 3 -
-- Test Type -- Please enter the type of testing that
you would like your child to use -- e.g., addition,
subtraction, multiplication, etc.
-- High Number -- A number from 3 to 15 should be used.
This is used to limit the size of numbers used. For
example, when a child is first learning addition, by
selecting a 5, the parent can ensure that the sum
will not exceed 10 (i.e, 5 + 5).
-- Sound Capabilities -- At this point, we need
information about the sound capabilities of your
computer. You can choose either 1.) No Sound, 2.)
PC Sound, or 3.) PC Sound & Sound Card.
If "3.) PC Sound & Sound Card" is selected, when the
CHILD program is run, songs and verbal encouragement
will be provided through your sound system. Some
sounds, such as the acknowledgement of key presses,
will also be provided through your PC speakers.
When you select "3.) PC Sound & Sound Card", you will
be asked whether you want to test the system. We
recommend you do so the first time you run the
PARENT program to confirm that our drivers are
compatible with your sound card. If not, you will
be asked to select "2.) PC Sound".
o At any time after you leave the PARENT program, your
instructions will remain intact. They are changed only by
rerunning the PARENT program as described above.
o Yes, you can turn off the computer and have your child
come back the following day, the following week, etc.
Your instructions will still remain in the computer.
START THE PROGRAM WITH THE "CHILD" COMMAND
------------------------------------------
o Your child starts the program by entering CHILD at the DOS
prompt for the CHLLNG directory. i.e.,
C:\CHLLNG> CHILD <ENTER>
o This will automatically load the necessary pictures
and personalized data needed by the CHILD program to run
properly.
- 4 -
o From then on, it is a simple matter to follow the
instructions. Whenever a math problem appears, be sure to
enter the right number and then hit <enter>.
o Numbers are entered using either of the following methods:
1.) Clicking the left mouse button while the arrow is
over a number square on the screen, or
2.) Hitting one of the number keys on the keyboard.
Be sure to either click on the enter square or hit the
<ENTER> key after the correct number is shown on the
screen.
o If you accidentally enter the wrong number, the last digit
can be erased by:
1.) Clicking the left mouse button while the arrow is
over the BKSPC square on the screen, or
2.) Hitting the <BACKSPACE> key on the keyboard.
o To minimize the likelihood of input mistakes, all keys are
disabled while the CHILD program is running, with the
exception of <number> keys, <backspace>, <escape>, and <F>
function keys.
o When using the "standard testing mode", pictures of
animals will be displayed periodically with captions
providing encouragement. To reduce their display time,
simply hit <enter> or click the left mouse button after
the caption appears.
ACCOMMODATING MORE THAN ONE CHILD
---------------------------------
o MATH CHALLENGE has the ability to store personalized data
for up to seven children. This feature allows parent to
use the same program for both younger and older children
within the family.
o When you initially call up the PARENT program, you will be
asked to select a file number. Use a different file
number for each child that will be using the program.
If only one child will be using the program, we suggest
you select file number 1.
o Remember that changing instructions with PARENT for one
file number (i.e., child) will not affect the
personalization data for any other file number (or child).
If you have five children, to personalize your
instructions for each, you would have to run the PARENT
- 5 -
program five times, each time calling a different file
number.
o If possible, you might want to consider adding the
CHILD program to a standardized menu you may be using.
That way the child does not need to remember the base
command or appropriate argument.
o As simple as that! There is no need for your child to
even be aware that there is a PARENT program in the CHLLNG
directory.
PC SOUND AND SOUND CARD OPTIONS
-------------------------------
o There are three different sound options available for MATH
CHALLENGE:
-- No Sound
-- PC Sound Only
-- PC Sound & Sound Card
These options are selected from a menu within the PARENT
program. To the extent described below, they can be
modified by toggling sound (i.e., hitting <F5>) from
within the CHILD program.
o If "No Sound" is selected from the PARENT program, there
will be no sound initiated when the CHILD program is run.
If "PC Sound" is selected, songs will be played through
the PC speakers when the CHILD program is run. Under both
cases, it will be possible to toggle the PC Sound system
on and off by hitting the <F5> function key.
o If you select "PC Sound & Sound Card" from the PARENT
program, songs and verbal encouragement/correction will be
provided through your sound card system when the CHILD
program is run. In such a case, it will be possible to
toggle between "No Sound", "PC Sound", and "PC Sound &
Sound Card" by hitting the <F5> function key.
